Citizenship
U.S. citizenship can be obtained in several ways, but the naturalization process is the most common route for those who were not born in the United States and do not have U.S. parents. The following are the requirements and steps to obtain citizenship through this process.
- Age: Continuous Residency: Have lived in the U.S. as a permanent resident (have a “Green Card”) for at least five consecutive years. For those married to a U.S. citizen, the period is reduced to three years.
- Physical presence: Be physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months (18 months if married to a U.S. citizen).
- State Residency: Live in the state or USCIS district where you are filing for at least three months.
- English proficiency: Have basic skills in reading, writing, and speaking English, with some exceptions for older adults or people with certain medical conditions.
- Civic Knowledge: Pass a test on U.S. history and government.
- Good moral character: Meet a standard of moral conduct, which means no history of felony offenses.
